What are stressors?

What are stressors?

We all face challenges and have different stressors in our lives. Can you identify some of these common stressors in your life?

What are your personal stressors?

Once you have identified your personal stressors it is important to differentiate between those stressors that can be eliminated and those that can be reduced.

Eliminating stressors, such as involving yourself in so many recreational activities that you don’t have time for work or study, can help you establish healthy work habits and maintain routine eating and sleeping routines.

Reducing stressors, such as procrastinating work deadlines or other commitments, can lead to less stress and healthier lifestyle choices.

How do you deal with stress?

It is just as important to take care of your mental health as it is for your physical health. Just as people have different stressors, they often deal with stress in different ways. It is important to understand what causes your stress, and find a method or even several methods for managing stress that work best for you.

What are some general suggestions?

Take care of your body. Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate. Try to eat healthy, well-balanced meals, exercise regularly, get plenty of sleep, and avoid alcohol and drugs.

Make time to unwind. Try to do some other activities you enjoy.

Connect with others by phone, text or email. Share your concerns and feelings with people you trust.

Some people find the outside environment stressful, especially in times of commotion in the world. In this case it might help to take breaks from news stories, including social media.
