How does protein affect your health?

Protein foods provide amino-acid building blocks. These are the materials the body uses to build and repair cells and tissues.

Where are protein foods found?

Meat, poultry, seafood, legumes, eggs, milk, cheese, processed soy products, nuts, and seeds are part of the protein food group. Legumes like beans, peas, lentils, chickpeas…are  good sources of vegetable-based protein.Cereal and grain products contain some protein, but in much smaller amounts.

How much protein should I eat?

Individual protein needs vary depending on age, gender, and level of physical activity. Most people meet their daily requirements easily. 

It is recommended that adult women eat 140 to 155 grams of protein per day and men eat 155 to 185 grams of protein per day. 

To put that in perspective, the size of an average woman’s palm is about the size of 85 -115 grams of protein serving, whereas the size of an average man’s palm is closer to 140- 170 grams.
