When to break your fast?
It is very important to test your blood glucose levels several times daily during your fast, so you can check you are keeping safe.
This is especially critical if you have type 1 diabetes or if you have type 2 diabetes and require insulin. Blood glucose monitoring and insulin injections do not break the fast and are important.
Anytime you have symptoms of high or low blood sugar or if you are feeling unwell, test your blood glucose.
You must break your fast immediately if you experience any of the following:
- Blood glucose level reaches below 70 mg/dl.
- Blood glucose level exceeds 300 mg/dl
- Symptoms of hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia or acute illness occur
If your blood sugar is above 300mg/dl, remember to drink plenty of water and recheck your blood glucose levels again after 1 hour from when you break your fast.
If your blood sugar is below 70mg/dl , have a snack and recheck your blood sugar every 15 minutes from when you break your fast until your blood sugars go above 70 mg/dl.
