What Do I Do When I Have Hyperglycemia?

Hyperglycemia means your blood glucose is higher than 130 mg/dL before meal/bedtime, or more than 180 mg/dL after a meal.

These symptoms can also be caused by sickness, missing an insulin dose, or eating too many carbohydrates.

How do I manage hyperglycemia?

When you are sick or are feeling these symptoms follow the steps below:

When Should I Alert The Care Team?

  • If you are not able to keep your blood glucose <240mg/dL.
  • If you vomit more than 2 times within 12 hours.
  • If you cannot eat or drink anything for 4 hours.
  • If you are vomiting or have diarrhea for 4 hours.
  • If you are sick for more than 24 hours or you start to feel worse.
  • If you take an extra insulin dose but your blood glucose reading does not go down.
  • If you get symptoms of DKA such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or difficulty breathing.
