What is a basal-bolus insulin therapy?
Basal-Bolus insulin therapy involves a routine where a longer acting form of insulin (basal) and shorter acting form of insulin (bolus) is used to regulate insulin levels through-out the day.
What Is Basal Insulin?
The blue line shows basal insulin which allows the cells to use glucose and keeps blood glucose levels in target when you are not eating.
Long acting insulin is used as basal insulin because it is needed for longer periods of time.
What Is Bolus Insulin?
The red line shows bolus insulin used to cover the quick rises in blood glucose that happens when we eat
Short acting insulin is used as bolus insulin because it is only needed for short periods of time after a meal.
